We talked on the phone the other day when I brought Mr. Marten Dondorp, an
undergraduate student doing research for his undergraduate thesis at the
University of Amsterdam, to use the library at the NSO. At that time, you
suggested that we write an email to you detailing what Marten is studying
and set up a time for us to come to interview you.
What Marten is trying to understand is the relationship between identity,
census construction and categorization, and language. We noted that the
2000 and 2010 censuses were different from previous ones in that they
included information not just about about literacy in Thai but also about
the languages spoken at home. You indicated during our phone conversation
that record of the discussions about ethnicity and languages are kept by
your office and they are probably not in the National Archives. The
