Prostate biopsy is usually performed under a general anaesthetic but can be performed as an out-patient procedure without an anaesthetic.
Rectal discomfort and blood in your bowel motion (from the rectum) is not uncommon following your procedure. When you ejaculate the semen will be darkly bloodstained and this will decrease over 3-5 ejaculations.
Approximately 2% of patients will get a significant prostate or blood infection (bacteraemia/septicaemia) following a prostate biopsy. You will be given oral antibiotics (pre-operatively) to help minimize this along with intravenous antibiotics at time of procedure.
Occassionlly urine retention may occur requiring an indwelling catheter for a short period of time following the procedure this is commonly caused from blood clots in the bladder.
All of these possibilities will be discussed with you in depth with both your doctor and practice nurse on booking your procedure.
Follow up for your biopsy results will be with 10-14 days post operatively and an appointment will be given to you on discharge.
