The presence of abortion among sows with ovarian cysts was above the average found
for sows considered normal, but as only two cases were recorded, few conclusions could
be made. However, the hypothesis that abortions could have been induced by endocrine
disorders associated with the presence of ovarian cysts should not be ruled out. Small cysts
have increased concentrations of estrogens (Miller, 1984) that can cause abortion in swine
(Jainudeen and Hafez, 1995).
