The health-related components of physical fitness have traditionally been identified as
cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, muscle flexibility, and body com-position (fatness) (Caspersen et al. 1985). The development of these components of
health related fitness (HRF) has been related to specific ‘health’ or disease outcomes.
Indeed, Pate (1988) has argued that ‘physical fitness’ should be defined solely in terms of the health related aspects by stating that the following criteria should be met in such a definition:
