According to the definitive results of the 2011 Census, the population resident in
the Azores comprised 246 772 inhabitants, evidencing growth as compared to
the previous Census, conducted in 2001.
There was a 2% increase, which was largely due to a positive figure for inward
migration, since the natural increase only added 373 people.
In terms of the distribution by gender, the population showed a similar
behaviour in these two Census years, with the proportion of women being
slightly higher than that of men: 50.8% and 49.2%, respectively.
