Begin by identifying yourself and your survey. People are constantly bombarded by "junk" telephone calls and are inclined to hang up whenever a stranger calls. You can help avoid this problem if you immediately identify yourself and your topic, and make it clear that you are conducting a survey and not trying to sell anything. Your first few sentences on the telephone are similar to the cover letter for a mail survey, and should contain the same elements (see p.213)
