This workwasconductedataprivatenurseryinKafrEl-Sheikhgovernorateto
investigatethebioconversionofricestrawintoasoil-likesubstrate(SLS)by
Phanerochaetechrysosporium and Trichoderma hazianum and thepossibilityofusing
rice strawcompostinornamentalnurseriesasapartialortotalreplacementofcoconut
peat (CP)andvermiculite(V)inthegrowingmedium.Theresultsshowedthatrice
straw couldbetreatedbetterbyaerobicfermentation.Theauthorsusedfivemixturesas
follows:(1)Control(CP+Vat1:1v/v),(2)SLS(100%),(3)SLS+CP(1:1v/v),(4)SLS+V
(1:1 v/v),and(5)SLS+CP+V(1:1:1v/v/v).Datawererecordedasseedlingheight,no.of
leaves,shootfreshanddryweights,rootlengthandrootfreshanddryweightsinorder
to assessthequalityofbothtransplantsof Althearosea (hollyhock)and Calendula
officinalis (scotchmarigold).Hollyhockseedlingsgrowninmediumcontaininga
mixtureofSLS+CP+Vdisplayedqualitytraitssimilartothoserecordedfromthecontrol
treatment,whilescotchmarigoldseedlingsinthesamemediumfollowedthecontrol
mediuminquality.
