The looking-glass serves as a way for a person to gain self-realization. Although Isabella did not want to see herself for what she truly was, the looking-glass was there anyway. I think this poem can be applied to the writer’s own life especially considering the events surrounding her death. Although Woolf was as an accomplished writer and perhaps the greatest woman writer of the modern era, something was evidently missing internally. Although she had gained recognition among people in the world, she was dealing with turmoil in her soul. Woolf ended up committing suicide by drowning herself in the river near her own home. (1224) She would have mental breakdowns and suffered from depression. One cannot help but assume that Woolf was expressing her personal feelings in this short story and self-realization made her choose to take her own life
