Many people think: There are plenty of opportunities in Bangkok today for anyone serious about earning a living. Why do not the poor try harder to find employment?
The problem here is one of education. Educated or middle class Thais tell their children that they must take education seriously and plan for education after secondary school. These people stress the fact that it is getting more difficult for high school graduates to find employment since machines continue to replace people in society. If it is difficult for high school graduates to find employment, how much more difficult is it for dropouts and semi-literates? If automation threatens the skilled worker, how much more does it threaten the unskilled labour? Moreover, how many times will a person make the rounds of employment offices unsuccessfully before losing confidence, hope and initiative
The semi-literates are _________.
able to read fluently
able to read or write fluently
able to read but not to write fluently
unable to both read and write fluently
