The Uchhali Wetlands Complex has been declared as a Ramsar Site in 1996 under the
Ramsar Criteria 2, 4, 5 and 6. Three lakes are included in Uchhali Wetlands Complex:
Uchhali Lake, Khabekki Lake and Jahlar Lake. Khabekki Lake was listed as a Ramsar
Site in 1976. Ramsar Monitoring Mission in May 1990 recommended the listing of all the
three wetlands as a group instead of Khabekki along as the waterfowl keep on shifting
from one wetland to the other. The three wetlands are important wintering sites for the
rare/vulnerable white-headed duck, ferruginous duck, greylag goose and flamingoes.
