Assignment 2:
Chili (Culture Shock)
Culture shock is a very real experience for many people who move to another country. Anyone who has lived or studied or even traveled extensively in another country has tasted and lived through culture shock. At the time it may feel more like homesickness, but what most people who haven't undergone any kind of pre-adaptation program don't know is that there are several stages one goes through when adjusting to a new language and culture. (Schmidt)
Chile is arguably one of the most developed countries in South America and very few expats will experience a tremendous degree of culture shock. Most Chileans are welcoming and friendly, and familiar Western brands and food items are readily available for purchase, although prices may be unusually high due to import taxes. However, there are a number of small differences with which expats in Chile need to familiarize themselves.
We chose some factors to show you how different between Chile and Thailand and how it can be culture shock.
The first factor is about religion. The factor that could cause culture shock is religion. Most of people in Chile are Roman Catholics. They have played a large role in defining social and political life and there are religious instruction in public schools is almost exclusively Roman Catholic. Even though Thai and Chilean have played a large role in defining social, but Most of Thai people are Buddhism, both of them have quite different doctrine, the different cult or their implementation and place where count on people in their religion. Example In Chile, they use church for cult and pray and it's also is the place that count on people but In Thailand, it's temple .The first thing for culture factors is church, all of Thailand have fully temple, we aren't familiar seeing many church and implementation of Roman Catholics. For social life and cult, Thai and Chilean quite different as the different religion for example most of Chilean are expiated sin or are cleansed sin, on the other hand, In Thailand, we can't do this. We believe people can't removed through the grace. The result impact to our culture shock is we don't familiar with church or social life of Chile because we don't know how should we do when is in church, should pray or not as well as we don't understand their culture why they do that and their life depend on religion but Thai and Chile have different religion .
The second factor is language. Chile use two language for communication it's Quechua and Spain. If you live in Chile you have to learn about Spain language because Chile use Spain language more than Quechua language. Most of Chile people use Spain language for speaking or all of communication. If you do not learn Spanish as well you may use the hard life in Chile because Chile not use English to speaking. Although Chilean Spanish is the national language. But people who work in the service industry, most able to communicate in English. However, if you need to travel to remote places. You should learn the basics of Spanish in order to communicate. if Chile people come to Thailand but they can’t speak English it hard to communication with other people because Thai people use Thai language , English for communication and now Thai people use Chinese more , So Chile have to learn about English more when they come to Thailand or they go to oversea if you don't learn about English or can't speak Thai or English it make people don't understand. However this reason may make culture shock.
The last factor is food. Chilean Chilean cuisine is bread and nuts is the main meal of Chilean people and they like to eat lamp, beef and seafood. And when they cooking always use olive oil in the main ingredient. Moreover Chilean people eat Halal food, because they believe that Halal food suitable for Muslim. And they like to eat spicy taste. But in Thailand rice is main meal and focus on the vegetables and meat in one meal such as Pad Tai, Tomyamkong, etc. For Halal food of Thai people are not popular because in Thailand, the people consumption food of CP company. It popular in Thailand. When you live in Chile, you will adapt to them culture. What they eat? , What the flavor? I was supposed to eat like them. Which you will allow to cook Thai food in Chile, Maybe it's hard for you, because cooking ingredients are scarcely. So you gradually adapt is the best alternative for you.
