The ethics of authenticity
An authentic experiences as one in which individuals feel themselves to be in touch with both a real world and with their real selves (Handler and Saxton, 1988: 243). Yet as Wang points out, it would be mistaken to believe that there is an objective or simple causal relation between these two aspects: it would be wrong to think that the emotional experience of the real ‘self’ (hot authenticity) necessarily entails, coincides with or results from the epistemological experience of a ‘real’ world out there cool authenticity.
