Found in 1993 - 1994 , the serious problem in Bangkok is
dust scatter. Excessive thick smoke and toxic vapour from
massive vehicles, incompleted combustion of engine from idle
vehicles and poisonous chemicals spread out from automobile
exhaust pipes are the main reasons of air pollution.z Furthermore,
scattered dust from many construction materials loading on the
trucks and from many sites of construction which have no
adequate covers also generate the problems. Inspection at some
congested areas in Bangkok found that toxicogenic air pollutants
composed of Carbonmonoxide (CO), Nitrogendioxide(NOz)
5ulphurdioxide (502)' ozone(03)' dust and lead, which size
smaller than 10 microns, can be directly inhaled to lower
respiratory tract of humansP
The effects of air pollutant to human organism both in
short and long term, especially pulmonary function, were found
in the resident in those areas and commuters. As from the records
of many hospitals under BMA. supervision, the highest number
of patients admitted are respiratory malfunction.l,2,3
The objective of this project is to study the effects of air
pollutants upon the pulmonary function in Thai traffic police,
selecting high risk group such as police working at the high
polluted intersection as well as the low risk group, by comparing
the vital capacity and chest expansion in both groups.
