Students reported that the expectations of knowledge and scope of practice held by their
respective mentors surpassed what they felt they were capable of, and led to students
experiencing intermittent feelings of ‘helplessness’ and ‘frustration within themselves’. One
student expressed this as “I'd come home and that night would discuss things and have a
beer and I'd just be like, I'm just so frustrated with myself”, while another said “there was
(sic) too many times that I was left on-scene feeling useless and, um, ah, like I was basically
taking up space”
