Data on the water quality of transport water suggest that the current practice in reducing the metabolic wastes in transport water is insufficient to lower ammonia and stabilize pH to acceptable levels. Use of anaesthetics to lower the metabolic rate and enhance the stress resistance of the fish could be a promising solution, but it warrants further research. To lower fish loss due to thermal shock or heat loss, further research on the design of styrofoam boxes
with better insulation properties is needed.
