METHOD
Participants were 210 (men = 110, women = 100) enrolled in small group
communication classes at two large mid-western universities. Age range was 18 to 48
[M = 22. 31, SD = 3.79). Instructors formed the groups using random selection.
Most groups had five to six members who met for approximately five-weeks. Although
class time was given, most groups met five times or more outside of class from one to
several hours. Groups orally presented projects, prepared booklets, and kept minutes
of meetings. Students received group and individual grades.
