Fish abundance and diversity (identified to the lowest possible taxon, mostly the species level) were quantified using 5 m wide
belt transects (see English et al., 1997). The abundance of schooling fish and those occurring in very high numbers were estimated using Log4 abundance categories (English et al., 1997). The com-pletion of a fish transect required approximately 15 min, and all three depths (5, 10 and 15 m) per site were surveyed within an hour.
