Legendary businessman Sam Walton founded Walmart, the highly suc cessful chain of discount retail stores that revolutionized American busi- ness and made him one of the wealthiest people in the world. Walton possessed many character traits that led to his success, but few traits en deared him to his workers as much as the respect with which he treated them. Walton often traveled from store to store, encouraging his employ- ees, and it was said that he knew the names of all of his store managers, as well as the names of their spouses! Imagine a person that busy taking the time to learn the names of the people who work for him. That appre- ciation and respect for others was an important part of Walton's success. Is there another company you are aware of (or that you have worked for) that strives to treat workers with respect?
