To alleviate these problems, the author has developed
an improved FE inductance calculation method that evaluates
machine inductances of an equivalent circuit model
(Fig. 1). Based on the flux linkage approach, the method
utilizes common FE solutions such as are used for torque
calculations. These require no current perturbations and
allow for actual multiwinding excitations. In other words,
FE magnetic field solutions of an electrical machine with
actual excitations can be used for inductance, torque, and
other parameter calculations. The number of FE solutions
is therefore greatly reduced, saving computing time and
efforts. Although the developed method incorporates certain
simplifying conditions as used by equivalent circuits,
it takes the saturation effect and some geometric details
into account, and thus produces greater accuracy than is
obtained through inductance determination by the generalized
electrical machine theory [ 11. This new method is
demonstrated in detail by inductance calculations forPMSM’s and is verified using test results from a 30 hp
PMSM.
