Police discover five fake bombs in Yala
Bomb disposal squads were called to investigate a series of fake bombs planted around Yala's Muang district on Thursday.
A team was first called to Phetkasem Road in tambon Lam Mai early Thursday after a suspicious box was discovered at the scene.
Police were originally called to the scene after a car tyre was set ablaze about 4.30am, Lam Mai police chief Thanasit Mathayat said.
Officers were conducting a search for four teenagers who were seen in the area prior to the tyre burning.
The suspicious device, sealed with tape, was later found to contain only sand, Pol Col Thanasit said.
Similar cardboard boxes held together with sticky tape were also found in two other locations on the same road. Both also turned out to be hoaxes, the police chief said.
Two more suspicious-looking objects were also discovered on the Ban Niang-Yaha road in Muang district and in Ban Ban Ngosine in Yaha district. Both turned out not to contain any explosives.
Police said they believed the fake bombs were the work of southern insurgents.
Meanwhile, a village headman in Narathiwat was shot dead in Muang district Thursday morning, police said.
Muang district police chief Somporn Meesuk said the attack occurred about 7am in front of a furniture shop in Ban Khok Sumu, tambon Bang Po.
Witnesses told police that Abdulloh Da-o, 48, the chief of Ban Khok Sumu, was returning home from a tea shop when a gunman riding in the back of a pick-up truck opened fire with an assault rifle. Abdulloh died at the scene.
