Informed Consent and Compensation
Issues related to informed consent may need to be
adapted for the local context; for example, a waiver of
written informed consent may be appropriate in
certain settings, with diligent documentation of verbal
informed consent that is reconfirmed throughout the
study period. Compensating participants with money
may be problematic in very impoverished areas and
seen as coercive. Consulting local collaborators
and expert mentors about culturally appropriate ways
to thank participants for their time is highly
recommended.
