Comparing:
* Yearly peat oxidation C emission estimates (Mt C yr-1) for Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and
Borneo [derived from Miettinen et al. submitted].
* CO2 emissions (in Mt C yr-1) from fires in equatorial Southeast Asia [derived from the Global
Fire Emission Database GFED].
* Total fire emissions include grass/shrubland fires, deforestation/degradation fires, peat fires and
agricultural waste burning [derived from GFED].
Peat fires cause temporary peaks in C emissions.
But peat oxidation occurs continuously every year &
emissions can be of a similar magnitude.
