A low-cost implementation was essential to make this level
of radar technology accessible to students. Each kit costs
approximately $360 making it possible to fund a class of 24
students in teams of three. Costs are reduced in the kit by
choosing a simple FMCW architecture, using coffee cans for
antennas, and mounting everything on a wood block. Analog
circuitry was implemented on a solderless breadboard so that
fabrication could occur anywhere on the students’ own time
(in a dorm room for example), without the need for laboratory
space
