I don’t necessarily agree with all the annotations or the idea of it either. First of all, I think the song is more of a manipulated relationship where the girlfriend is the one doing the damage to the relationship. I could be wrong, but I feel as though she’s the one with the mask and seems to be doing most of the “crime” and it seems like the writer is stuck outside. It also seems she’s very manipulative at the end when it goes “she says ‘babe you look so cool’” Like she loves this thrill and the power. Possibly even the dynamic between Bonnie and Clyde?
But I digress to my comment about the annotations. I’m a writer and as a writer I know that, personally, I don’t always write line by line. Sometimes songs just have an overall meaning or dance around a certain subject or event. I’ve written songs set up as stories and written songs set up as just an idea. That’s my opinion at least.
