Consider a hypothesis test where the sample size is small and for which the t distribution is the appropriate sampling distribution. Suppose it is desired to test the hypothesis that the mean score of students on a national examination is 500 against the alternative hypothesis that it is less than 500. A random sample of 15 students is taken from the population that produces a sample mean of 475. The standard deviation of the population is estimated by the standard deviation of the 15 sampled items, S= 35. It is assumed that the population of examination scores follows a normal distribution.
