The shear force samples were prepared to give five
replicate samples of 1-cm2 cross-sectional area and the force
required to shear these was measured perpendicular to the fibre
orientation using a Lloyd texture analyser (Model LRX, Lloyd
Instruments, Hampshire, UK) fitted with a V-shaped cutting
blade that sheared down through the samples.
