Depending on the intended use, cells or tissues of different origin may need different fixation
schedules. With respect to immunohistology, any kind of fixative can be imagined to be
useful for immunostaining. The many fixation proposals published in the long history of
microtechnique is hardly to summarize. Here, we can give only a selection of traditional and
widely employed fixatives including some of the newer fixation formulations. Fixation
solutions for the study of fine structural details ususally need more careful preparation than
those for routine histopathological purpose. For the sake of morphology, it is often advised to
