Rushworth Kidder, in his book- How good people make Tough Choices suggests following these nine steps when dealing with an ethical dilemma.1-Recognize there is a moral issue- Is this issue merely a social convention or a genuine moral question?2-Determine the actor- Am I responsible for the issue? Do I have the obligation or the power to do anything about it?3- Gather the relevant facts- What happened? When? Who knew what? Who said what?4- Test for right vs. wrong issues- Is this a moral temptation rather than a moral dilemma? Is one alternative clearly morally wrong?5- Test for right vs. right paradigms- What sort of dilemma is it? Does it fit one of the four paradigms: truth vs loyalty, individual vs. community, short-term vs. long-term or justice vs. mercy?6- Apply the resolution principles- Consider the ends-based, rules-based, and care-based principles. Which is most relevant?7- Consider the “third way”- Is there a compromise that can be made? Can a creative solution be found that satisfies all parties involved?8- Make the decision- Choose one of the options. This requires moral courage.9- Revisit and reflect on the decision- After the decision has been made and implemented, reflect on what happened. Can any lessons be taken away from the situation?Coming to the end of an assignment where my partner and myself are using these nine steps as a way of addressing a ethical dilemma.
