Data/document storage has been mentioned at differ-ent stages. In general an additional document manage-ment system (DMS) should recover and store all ordering/reporting/measurement data and register data export. In addition, a DMS should not only save the unchanged/original measured values but also store background infor-mation, such as reference values of the test that was used to analyze the sample as well as the method (this is of interest if the method has changed or another measuring device is used). Additionally, the software should tag the data for follow-up evaluation and for an easy change of the LIS provider. The actual standards for medical data tele-communications should be checked for improvements. InGermany, e.g., the ldt (‘labordatenträger’) format is insuf-ficient especially for microbiology data. There is, e.g., no possibility to transfer antibiograms. One solution is to use a new data format similar to xml (extensible markup lan-guage) to correct this. For the sake of completeness spe-cialized software should be responsible for the different forms of billing and security backup.
