Mishima’s list of people to beat, or rather the fact of its existence, was funny. I guess we should congratulate Sawamura on making it on it, heh. I’m interested in learning something about the 2 people from it we don’t know anything about yet - Hayama and Andou. They’re namedropped here for a reason. Maybe.
Ochiai, you sly dog. In this chapter he was looking at Rei rather than watching the game, lol. Ah, women are so not easy to understand, and even Ochiai, who prides himself on his analytical abilities, is buffled as to why Takashima is angry. But he still tries to soothe her and explain that sometimes you have to forget about the absolute perspective and try to see things in the relative light. This is probably the first time I feel a bit of amiability towards Ochiai.
Rei being angry proves her attitude towards Miyuki is somewhat special, and he is somewhat special to her (not in the love sense, though). I don’t remember any such reaction from her to Furuya’s playing injured, but here she obviously opposes to Miyuki’s playing with the injury. It was her who brought the doctor to take a look at Miyuki, and I guess she wanted him benched the same instance but had to give up in the face of Kataoka’s decision and Miyuki’s very true words. And now she’s angry, hehehe.
Now, onto what’s going on on the field. Mishima did get on base, which made it almost certain that Sawamura will have to face Sanada in this inning as well. But first, his fight against Raichi will have to take place… And you know what? What an awesome last page this chapter has! If you didn’t see any parallels to the summer final before, I’m sure you can see them now. Because that expression on Sawamura’s face and that attitude is so reminiscent of how Narumiya was in the last stage of that memorable final!
That expression scared Mishima. Now, we know that Sawamura can pull off quite a deathglare (remember those rapefaces of his back in the beginning after Chris said to him that he needs to glare at the runner? admittedly, they’re more funny than anything when you get used to them), but the one he gave Mishima to make him stumble is a very different one, and because of it, all the more scary. The fearlessness and calm determination that Narumiya demonstrated back in the summer are now obvious in Sawamura, and this is what scared Mishima.
Add to the above that, as Ochiai pointed out, Seidou’s morale is on the rise despite their desperate situation, and you’ll get the full replay of the summer final, only now Seidou is starring as Inajitsu.
Now, let me say a few words about Raichi and those little things about him that might not be immediately obvious but might end up playing a big role in the denouement. Back in the semifinal Yakushi vs Sankou, Raichi got struck out swinging by Amahisa, not even being able to graze the ball with his bat. This apparently hit him pretty hard psychologically, which resulted in his going after Kawakami’s slider on the same course as Amahisa’s slider that finished him off in the semifinal. And not just that: at his previous at-bat, he tried to hit Sawamura’s hyper 4-seam (this is how I dubbed it anyway) and got jammed as a result. The two instances where Raichi went after tricky pitches when there was no real need to got Raizou reasonably worried that Raichi might not have got fully over his defeat in the semifinal (especially considering that the final is played right after the semifinals, on the next day). To elaborate, the reason why Raichi went after those tricky pitches might be because of his subconscious fear to lose again without ever putting his bat to the ball which is pushing him to start hitting right away, without any sort of waiting and evaluating first. The point is, Raichi might be playing with a chink in his armor, and if Sawamura’s calm but fierce determination hits it, anything might happen.
