Only a small proportion of our patients with certain risk factors of stroke identified them as such. This is considered a major problem, as awareness of one’s own risk profile is a precondition for risk changing behavior, and thus prevention of stroke. Regular contact with the health care system regarding these risk factors should have an expected effect on knowledge. Samsa et al32 showed that being informed about one’s own stroke risk by a physician was associated with an understanding of increased stroke risk, which in turn was related to a higher compliance with preventive measures of stroke.
