Initiatives such as New Zealand’s proposed Biodiversity
Strategy and Australia’s proposed National System
for the Prevention and Management of Introduced
Marine Pests take a more comprehensive approach to
target marine introduced species and offer the hope of
moving beyond the single issue focus of ballast water
control. These initiatives include,or are planned to
include,a range of pre-border to post-border control
systems for various vectors, monitoring activities to
detect new incursions or the spread of existing pests,
pest emergency response procedures including interagency
coordination and cost-sharing arrangements,
and options for long-term control of existing pests.
