EN is typically reserved for patients with certain types of cancer or for those whose treatment plan is in jeopardy because of malnutrition, such as patients undergoing chemo- radiaton to the head or neck. In this population, the early use of use of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feedings has been found to decrease weight loss, dehydration, malnutrition , and unplanned treatment interruptions (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 2012). In adding, an arginine-enriched enteral formula given perioperatively to malnour- ished patients with head and neck cancer has been shown to improve long-term survival (Buijs et at.,2010). Likewise, for patients undergoing treatment for GI cancers, glutamine enriched formulas have been shown to help maintain gut integrity and protect against damage from radiation and chemotherapy (NCI, 2011), For other cases, the decision to use EN is individualized and should be limited to malnourished patients with a functional GI
