“You know where I’ve just been?” Lee asked.
“No. Where?”
“I’ve been to our old home. It burned beautifully. The whole
house went up in one huge fire.”
“Are you serious?”
“It’s true. I’m not worried — I bought the place last week. Paid
thirteen thousand dollars to the bank. If you own it, then you can
burn it, right?”
“How — ?”
“Gasoline. Here, smell my hands.” She put them under his
nose. They bore the unmistakable smell of gasoline.
“But why?”
“Evil things happened there. It was filled with ghosts and
spirits. N ow they’re gone.”
A dirty truck entered the graveyard through the iron gates,
and drove slowly along the path. It stopped at a small building in
a corner. Three black men slowly got out.
“I’m not going back to Chicago, Lee,” said Adam.
“What?”
“I’m changing jobs.”
“To do what?”
“Death penalty work. I’ll be spending more time at
Parchman.”
She rubbed her face and pulled back her hair. “I guess you
know what you’re doing.”
“Maybe.”
The three men were standing next to an old yellow
mechanical digger.
“I have an idea,” said Lee. “T here’s a little cafe near here where
Sam used to take me and Eddie on our birthdays. Let’s see if it’s
open.” She was excited and getting to her feet. “Com e on. I’m
hungry.”
