Class Five: Ethics Readings and Discussions
For this week, we studied about ethics. You have a few tasks that you will be required to do and to post about.
1. Go to the website from the BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/introduction/intro_1.shtml#h2
Read and summarize the website and explain why ethics is important in our lives.
2. Summarize the main idea for each theory/theorist from the reading “Communication Ethics.” Try to use your own words and include page numbers. Use quotation marks for direct quotes.
1). Ethical egoism (Epicurus)
2) Utilitarianism (John Stuart Mill)
3) Categorical imperative (Kant)
4) Self-evident duties (W. D. Ross)
5) Justice as fairness (Rawls)
6) Golden Mean(Aristotle)
7) Divine Will (Augustine)
8) Dialogic Ethics (Buber)
9) A different voice(Gilligan)
In addition, answer these questions:
a). Explain which theory you like the best and agree with the most. Explain why.
b). Explain which theory you don't like and don't agree with. Explain why.
Try to give REAL LIFE examples from you own lives when explaining why. If you do this assignment well, you will be prepared for your quiz next class!
N.B. Make sure to take notes, underline and highlight important points in your reading. If I don't see any annotations on your handout, that means YOU DID NOT READ!
