For the next ten consecutive years after that, rice production in the country increased a million tonnes per year and Vietnam rice export achieved a growth rate of 12%/year. In 1999 the country exported 4.5 million tonnes of rice and became the world’s second largest rice exporter after Thailand.
Economists and trading analysts point out the reasons why Vietnam has gone that far in the global rice market are the right choices of rice varieties, crop yield increasing measures, farmland expands and the country’s effort to access world trade activities.
