Under tile impact of modern communications, technology, and transportation, globalization’s pace has now accelerated. That is why it has been in the news so much recently. We are more aware of globalization and its profound impact than were earlier generations. Our awareness of globalization has grown precisely because of the very technologies previously listed that are among the strongest agents of globalization: television, movies, the Internet, and so on.
Globalization sets loose powerful cultural, social, economic, and political forces, and inevitably as part of such a powerful global movement of change it produces both winners and losers. Most of US benefit enormously from globalization and, frankly, could not live without it (which is why so many countries wish to join the WTO); but we need to recognize that there arc losers in the process and that we need to pay attention to them also.
