shows the lab-scale modified IDEA process coupled with
sludge ozonation. The cylindrical reactor has a diameter of 20 cm
and maximum working volume of 15 L. In the modified IDEA process, the influent was continuously and uniformly introduced into
the bottom of a single bioreactor via a specially designed inlet unit.
This inlet unit enabled a quiescent and uniform distribution of the
influent within the sludge layer not disturbing the stationary state
of the settled sludge. Mechanical mixing and air sparging were
separately conducted to provide anoxic and aerobic condition, respectively.
The cyclic operation was controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC).
The excess sludge was wasted and transferred to a cylindrical shaped ozonation chamber. The ozonation was performed at a designated ozone supply rate and the ozone
dose
