The NSAIDs should be co-prescribed for
six to eight weeks and colchicine for three
to six months to reduce the risk of flare. If a
flare occurs the allopurinol should not be
stopped. Allopurinol is introduced at a low
dose, 100mg daily, and gradually increased
by 50-100mg every two to four weeks up
to a maximum of 600-900mg daily until
uric acidlevels are below 300mcmol/L
