Seven babies had undergone a systematic hearing screening procedure (5 universal screening, 2 high-risk screening),
and 10 had been referred for hearing assessments through traditional referral routes, typically through the family doctor,
because of parent suspicion of a problem. The average age of diagnosis of all children in the sample was 16.1 months
(range = 0.8–41.9 months). Nine children were diagnosed before 12 months of age, including 6 who had undergone
systematic hearing screening. The sample was selected to include children with varying degrees of hearing loss and different hearing devices. The sample included more children with severe and profound degrees of hearing loss consistent
