In this chapter, the phonetic principles elaborated in the
foregoing sections will be applied in transcription. Words in English, as
well as those in all other languages, can be recorded or transcribed by
means of the phonetic alphabet, designed on the basis of the principles
of sound articulation.
PRINCIPAL GUIDELINES
The following guidelines are given to help simplify the rather
complex system of phonetic symbols used to represent vowel and
consonant sounds, especially those in the English language.
