M. grandiflora belongs to the Magnoliids, which are basal
Angiosperms (see Fig. 1 in Amborella Genome Project 2013). In
this species, some characteristics common in Gymnosperms
(e.g., the fleshy fruit-like structure accompanying the seed) coexist
with others typical of Angiosperms, such as the dry follicle,
which is a fruit proper.
