A TED talk, "Schools Kill Creativity," presented by Sir Ken Robinson, states very clearly how schools are destroying creativity by making art and music classes less important, and supporting the core subjects, which is completely true. Math, English, science, history; these are the four core classes at almost any public school. They entail logical thinking, step by step analysis by the student to solve a problem, and memorizing facts, dates, and other concrete pieces of data. Only in English are their any inventive assignments, and still most projects and essays have clear cut rules and outlines. Even physical education is quite often a required course. Music however, is not required. Art, not always required. These classes, strictly revolving around creative, none systematic thinking, and involve a very holistic mindset, help to improve upon the right-hand side of a human brain. Not requiring these courses only serves to cause that ingenuity to atrophy, since not much imagination is really used later on in life. Also, what about the standardized tests? The SAT, ACT, or any other standardized test? What do they do? They test purely upon the systematic intelligence of students. So, in order to gain entry into a college a student must be extremely proficient about handling concrete data, and creativity just doesn't matter the same amount. So what will students do to get into college? Not worry about art or music, because that won't get you a college degree; math or history will. So they will throw down their originality because they believe it to be pointless. Therefore, public schools around the world are taking ingenuity and crushing it to a pulp, to be discarded by the majority of students.
