Gun control is a “hot button” issue, especially in the wake of so many recent, tragic mass shootings. It is also a “polarizing” issue, which means that it tends to divide people.
When you’re writing an argumentative essay, it actually doesn’t matter what side of an issue you take. What matters is that you take a side and support whichever position you choose. In the case of the gun control issue, you could plausibly—and defensibly—take either side: strict regulation up to and including an outright ban on firearms, or complete legalization of individual gun ownership.
