Thousands of people who have full-time jobs in successful organisations can still find themselves caught in a poverty trap. Workers such as cleaners, catering and security staff often need two or more jobs just to keep afloat. The national minimum wage is £6.19 an hour - but 'living wage' employers now pay their workers at least £8.55 in London and £7.45 outside the capital. There has been a long-running campaign to persuade employers to provide this higher wage to their lowest paid staff. But, despite years of protests and lobbying, business and politicians have been slow to respond.
