Step 2.2: Consider Disability Adjustment. Several theoretical constructs from rehabilitation and psychology appear to have potential here. First, there is the
generic three-phase continuum of adjustment developed by this author, but influenced in part by Gandy, et al. [15]. This framework will provide some sense of “where the consumer is” with respect to the adjustment continuum (i.e., awareness, acceptance or adjustment), while concurrently clarifying what the consumer defines as an ideal level of adjustment. Personal assets or
residual capabilities of the consumer are other fertile areas for exploration [28]. Finally, knowing the consumer’s personal commitment to active involvement in
counseling and rehabilitation processes is highly recommended [34]. In the aggregate, these approaches suggest the following examples of interview questions:
