First, mapping the paths of transmission of parental frustration arising from
work, and its effect on the family, especially youths, provides us with much
information about the development of youths’ beliefs regarding the relation
between work and family. This study builds upon and extends previous
theoretical efforts on work and family, by systematically linking this stream
of work with the literature on emotion and youth’s work centrality. We
developed and tested a model that clarifies the processes through which
parents’ work experiences affect their frustration and youths’ attitudes
towards work, specifically work centrality. Our research model draws upon
research on spillover and emotions to explain how parents’ work–family
conflict permeates the family in ways that have consequences for youths’
work centrality.
