The diets of Glossy Swiftlets foraging in different habitats were compared by examining boluses
removed from individuals living in colonies in forest, rural and urban habitats. Collections from the rural and urban habitats were made on 6 days in July and August 1995, and from the forest habitat over 2 days in September 1995. The forest colony of approximately
5000 birds (pers. obs.) was located in a man-made culvert at Ampang Reservoir, 25 kni southeast of Kuala Lumpur, Peninsular Malaysia (see Medway 1969 for details). The reservoir is surrounded by Ampang Forest Reserve (2700 ha including areas of primary rainforest) over which foraging swiftlets were observed. The rainforest here is contiguous with that
covering the main ranges of the Genting Highlands (Payne 1990). The rural colony of approximately 1500 birds (Tompkins & Clayton 1999) was located under a
house 16 km west of the town of Sandakan, Sabah. These swiftlets were observed foraging over surrounding gardens and oil palm plantations. The urban colony of approximately 30 birds (pers. obs.) was located on a house in a residential estate 2 km from Sandakan town centre, where the birds were observed foraging over a patch of waste ground immediately behind the estate
