The biochemical nature of the retina is such that dark adaptation is often
used to reset the neural retina. Taurine uptake has been examined in four
vertebrate species (frog, goldfish, rat and chicken), and although there are
uptake differences in the dark retina for the lower vertebrates, these changes
were associated with GABA uptake. No differences exited in the taurine flux,
suggesting that the light/dark cycle has negligible impact on taurine flux in
the retina (Starr 1973).
