Parachnowitsch and Manson explain in the seventh review how plant chemistry also plays a central role in
plant–pollinator interactions.
There is a complex interplay between multiple chemical traits. Floral scent is the
major driver in attraction of pollinators, whereas the
chemical quality of the nectar reward may significantly
impact on duration, frequency of flower visitations and
pollen transfer among individual plants.
The authors
argue that holistic studies that include both signal and
reward chemistry are needed to determine the relative
contribution of these complex and dynamic floral traits
and to better understand the ecology and evolution of
plant pollinator interactions
